It was the season of sheep-shearing, and David sent his men to seek favor from Nabal, a man wealthy with thousands of goats and sheep.
But Nabal insulted David and sent the men away empty-handed.
This provoked David, and he swore to kill every man in Nabal’s household, but Nabal’s wife, Abigail, after learning about the incident, acted wisely.
Abigail took supplies, accosted David on his way, interceded for Nabal, and advised him to refrain from bloodshed.
She affirmed faith in David, that he would be King over Israel, and when that time comes, David should be clean of shedding innocent blood.
David praised God, appreciated Abigail’s good sense and the role she had played to stop him from committing murder, and received her presents.
When Abigail reported the events to Nabal, he had a stroke instantly and was paralyzed, and about the tenth day, he died.
Some characteristics of the Early Church include community unity, generosity with one another, and common sharing.
A man named Joseph set an example; he sold a field and brought the money to the Apostles to sustain the growing disciples’ community (Acts 4:36).
Ananias and Sapphira mirrored Joseph but were untruthful about the money received for the land.
As Ananias presented the money to the Apostles, Peter rebuked him for lying to the Holy Spirit and for allowing Satan to fill his heart. Ananias immediately fell and died.
