1ST LESSON: Joel 2:23-32

2ND LESSON: Luke 4:12-21

God revealed that the mighty army locust attack was his doing and called for immediate repentance so that he might withdraw this curse and send blessings.

The LORD promised the restoration of grain, wine, and olive oil, enough to satisfy their needs.

God promised to demonstrate his faithfulness by sending autumn rain needed to soften the soil for plowing and the spring rain needed for the crop’s maturation.

He will also restore what they have lost to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts.

After restoring their food, God will pour out His Spirit upon all people; sons and daughters will prophesy, the old will dream, and the young men will see visions.

The era of the Spirit outpouring will be preceded by the ministry of the Messiah, when salvation will be available to all, but only the ones who call to the Lord will receive it.

In the second lesson, Jesus overcame the devil’s temptation by responding with Scripture, and the devil left him.

Jesus returned to Galilee filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, and he continues to teach in the synagogues.

He came to Nazareth, his boyhood village, and he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day.

The scroll of Isaiah was handed to him, and he unrolled it, finding the place where this was written:

“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that the captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.”

After this, he announced, “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day.”

Thus, Jesus proclaimed himself as the Messiah, the one who brings God’s ancient promises to pass.
