1ST LESSON: Num 28: 26-31

2ND LESSON: John 4: 34-38

In Numbers, the new Israeli generation receives the law and instructions for daily, Sabbath, and monthly offerings, as well as the annual festivals

The Festival of Weeks is also called the Festival of Harvest or Pentecost, which happens to be one of the three festivals to be celebrated by all Israelite males at the sanctuary

It comes seven weeks after the firstfruits of the barley harvest; as a time to celebrate the Lord’s provision in the harvest and all life’s provisions

They are to gather for worship on this day, skip all regular work and offer burnt offerings to the Lord; as an aroma pleasing to the Lord

Among which there must be a male goat to make atonement for them, while all animals used must be without blemish

Jesus said his nourishment comes from doing the will of God and from finishing the work, that is, dying on the cross

He communicated the dawn of spiritual harvest to his disciples using their understanding of the harvest season

Superior to the agricultural season is the season of soul-winning soul, for, through the coming of Jesus, the earth became ripe for harvest

Asking the disciples to open their eyes is figurative because their eyes were not literarily closed, but this reality that the harvest has already begun in the history of salvation just as seen in the Samaritans that believed

Jesus further instructed his disciples to go out to reap the benefits of the labor of laborers that has gone ahead

In this context, reaping the labor of others is not a material gain of other people’s wealth but implies asserting even the minimal evangelistic efforts to the foundational work of the Law and the prophets to bring people to repentance, through Jesus Christ
