1ST LESSON: 2 Samuel 2:1-7

2ND LESSON: Romans 9:1-13

After the death of Saul, despite his desperate actions to kill David, David nonetheless mourned Saul and his son Jonathan.

David now sought to return to his tribal region of Judah and asked the LORD accordingly

God approved David’s return and to Hebron specifically, so he returned with his family and men.

While at Hebron, the tribe of Judah acted independently from the other tribes of Israel and anointed David as king over the people of Judah

When the news of a decent burial of Saul by the men of Jabesh-Gilead reached David, he sent a message of appreciation

David also requested of the men of Jabesh-Gilead to be his loyal subjects, like the people of Judah

In the second lesson, Paul expressed his anguish over Israel because a good number of the Jews was failing to believe the Good News about Jesus

He even wished to be cursed, by being cut off from Christ if that would save them

It seems Israel does not realize the value of their standing covenant with God; they are God’s adopted children

God gave them his glory, his covenant, his law, unique worship, as well as wonderful promises

Their ancestors are Abraham, Jacob and Isaac, and Christ himself from among them, an Israelite by human nature, yet they seem to take the Good News for granted

Although this might be the reality, but God has not failed in his promises to Israel because membership into God’s people does not depend on birth to the nation of Israel alone

Not all the physical descendants of Abraham received the promises but just Isaac

Even before Isaac gave birth to his twins, and before they had done anything good or bad, the Scripture wrote “I love Jacob, but I rejected Esau”

Salvation is available to all, and human decision is significant, yet God’s Sovereignty cannot be denied
