1ST LESSON: Genesis 22:1-18

2ND LESSON: Hebrew 11:1-12

God tested Abraham’s faith by asking him to take his only son to the land of Moriah and sacrifice him as a burnt offering.

A burnt offering is the complete destruction of the animal to renew the relationship between the holy God and sinful man.

Abraham traveled a 3- day journey, arrived at Moriah with Isaac and two servants, and instructed his servants to wait while he and Isaac traveled farther to worship God and return to them.

We have the fire and the wood, but where is the sheep for the burnt offering, Isaac asked his father. Abraham replied, God will provide.

Abraham tied his son and picked up the knife to kill him, but an angel called out, “Don’t lay a hand on the boy.”

Thus, God affirmed that Abraham truly feared Him and provided a ram for the sacrifice in place of Isaac.

Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh, and God reaffirmed His promises to Abraham.

The second lesson discusses great examples of faith and defines faith as “the reality of what we hope for; the evidence of things we cannot see.”

By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, and the people in the days of old earned a good reputation through their faith.

By faith, Abel brought a more acceptable gift; he was a righteous man.

By faith, Enoch was taken to heaven without dying; he was a person who pleased God.

Without faith, no man can please God; anyone who comes must believe that God exists and that He is a rewarder of those who sincerely seek Him.

By faith, Noah obeyed God and built a large boat, even though it had never rained in those days, and thus received the righteousness that comes by faith.

It was by faith that Abraham obeyed God, left his home, and lived in the promised Land in tents like a foreigner, waiting for the city planned and built by God.

It was by faith that Sarah was able to have a child, even when she was barren and too old.
