1ST LESSON: Joshua 7:19-26

2ND LESSON: Acts 5:1-10

Crossing the Jordan and conquering the inhabitants of the Promised Land, Israel attacked Ai, but were defeated to their amazement

This was because by the sin of one man, Achan, all Israel sinned, and the LORD forsook them

Through the covetousness of Achan, Israel had violated instructions about things set apart for God, for he stole dedicated items and hid them in his tent

God singled out Achan from his tribe, clan, and family

Achan confessed to taking from the plunder, a beautiful robe from Babylon, 200 silver coins, a bar of gold weighing more than a pound, buried in his tent

These items were recovered from his tent, and Achan, his family, and all that he owned were brought to the valley of Achor

According to the punishment for idolatry and blasphemy, all the Israelites stoned Achan and his family and burned their bodies.

So, the LORD was no longer angry

The author of Acts cited an excellent example of a man named Joseph, who sold a field and brought the money to the Apostles (Acts 4:36)

Not long after, Ananias and his wife sold a field but kept back some money and declared to the Apostles a false price.

Just as Peter rebuked him for lying to the Holy Spirit and allowing Satan to fill his heart, Ananias fell and died immediately.

Sapphira, his wife, came in not long after, claiming the same false price for the sold field; again, she also fell and died instantly.

They had both conspired to deceive the church leaders, and it consequently resulted in the instant death penalty for them.

God’s instant judgment instilled the fear of God among the people, and the Early Church’s purity was preserved.
