1ST LESSON: Deut 14:22-29

2ND LESSON: 1 Cor. 16:1-4

Moses speaks to the new generation of Israelites on tithes. Upon their arrival at the Promised Land must observe the annual tithing.

Each family must travel to where the Temple shall be located and eat the tithe of the grain, wine, olive oil, and firstborn of herds and flock with his family in the presence of God; so that they may learn to honor God always.

Alternatively, they are to convert the tithes to cash if the distance is very far and then use the money to buy meat and wine needed for the feast.

They are to eat the tithe of the first and second year with family members and, at every third year, store it up for the Levites, strangers, widows, and fatherless.

Although the tithing principle is held-up as a practice in the Christianity, the detailed religious exercise was mainly for the Jews in their national religion, Judaism.

Paul, an Apostle to the Gentiles, in his letter to the Corinthians, gave a direction to ease the collection for the Jerusalem church.

Although, the Jerusalem church commissioned the missions to the Gentiles but became in need at a point, and it was most likely due to famine (Act 11:28), so Paul was raising funds for them through the Gentile churches he founded.

The members of the Corinthian church, just as the Galatians did, are to keep aside some money every Sunday, saving it up so that there will not be a need for urgent fundraising when Paul comes.

Either well-to-do or poor, the criterion for believers should be in proportion to the earning of individuals.

Friends, if the churches give to sustain the Jerusalem church, we should emulate the same today.

We should give to further the work of God’s kingdom expansion.
