In the pre-exilic period, God’s word came to Judah through Joel, challenging and comforting them after they had experienced a natural disaster that threatened their very existence
Joel summoned the elders and all who lived in the land to pay attention, and as a lesson, this unusual experience must be reported to the coming generation
Differing species of locust invaded the land, eating up their crops, including vines, trees, and their bark, making them dry up
As a result, there was no food or wine, not even for worship sacrifice; Farmers, wine-drinkers, citizens, and the priests alike were all affected
Joel advised the priests to announce a time of national fasting, a time of mourning and repentance, a solemn meeting in God’s presence where the people should cry out to God
The words of Jesus to the church in Laodicea seriously rebuke them for being self-satisfied about their spiritual status
They are characterized by lukewarmness, and God warns of spitting down out of his mouth; they should be cold or hot, not neither cold nor hot
They seem to glory in their physical wealth, boasting in their self-sufficiency and overlooking God’s help, but Jesus says they are destitute, miserable, pitiful, blind, and naked
This city is reputable in banking, medicine, and is rich in fine wool, and was one of the most flourishing cities of Asia Minor
But Jesus said that true riches will come from buying refined gold from him, their nakedness will be truly covered by purchasing white clothes from him, and their true sight will come from buying medicine for their eyes from him
Jesus corrects and punishes those he loves, hence, they should take correction and repent
Again, God deals with us on a personal basis open the door of your heart to him
