Amos was one of the earliest prophets whose message was recorded at length.
He prophesied at a time when Israel enjoyed great prosperity, notable religious piety, and apparent security
Amos preached about repentance and the Day of the Lord to the people of the Northern kingdom (Israel)
Though his fifth and final vision depicts the destruction of the Temple, nonetheless, God would preserve a remnant for himself and restore the kingdom of David
Israel will possess the neighboring nations whom God has called to be his, thereby becoming part of the Davidic kingdom.
By this, God foretells the inclusion of the Gentiles among the people of God.
This restoration will be characterized by abundance; harvest will continue long enough into a new planting season
The exiled will return, live in peace, and be secured in their land
The kingdom of God is already among you, replied Jesus, but you will long for the return of the Son of Man
People would long to see Jesus’ earthly ministry again but will only wait for “his day”, when he will return
In between, false prophets will attempt to convince people that they are the Christ
He foretold his earthly ministry would end with suffering many things and rejection by his generation
He referred to the days of Noah and Lot, when the people rejected God’s means of salvation and continued their daily business until judgment met them unexpectedly.
This is precisely how it will be when the Son of Man comes again.
Hence, there is a need for urgency in following Christ because his return will happen when no man expects it.
Those who focus on earthly existence would lose their life; instead, they are to put Jesus ahead of everything in their lives.
