God called out Israel to make a kingdom of priests and a holy nation out of them
He wanted the children of Israel to trust in Moses his servant, so He came down on Sinai that the people could hear him speak with Moses
In preparation for this experience, the people must be consecrated in two days, ahead of the third day visitation
They are to wash their clothes and avoid sexual relations, which is related to ceremonial uncleanliness
Yet, the closest they can come is to the foot of the mountain; not so close to touch it
Anyone who touches the mountain must be put to death by stoning or shot with an arrow.
On the third day, God descended on the mountain with smoke and fire
Moses spoke, and the voice of God answered him
God called Moses to the top of the mountain so that he could receive the law for the people, but warned that no man should come near the mountain because the Holy God had descended on it
The second lesson narrates the extension of salvation to the Gentiles through the house of Cornelius
When Peter arrived at the house of Cornelius on invitation, he was already convinced that God accepts people from every nation who fear God and do what is right
This conviction was born by the revelation God gave him just before Cornelius' messengers arrived
Peter, as a witness, preached the Good News of Jesus; his life, death, resurrection, and his message
He affirmed the prophecies that testify sins of everyone who believes shall be forgiven through his name
While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit came on all those listening; they spoke in tongues and praised God
And Peter had them baptized
