1ST LESSON: Malachi 2:1-9
2ND LESSON: Hebrews 12:18-29
Just a century after the temple was rebuilt, this symbol of genuine worship yet degraded and the society was plagued with injustice.
Malachi challenges the people and warns the priests.
God will curse the blessings they have received if they continue to dishonour Him.
Although God wanted his covenant with Levi to continue, He would smear the dung of sacrificed animal on their faces and discard the priest along with the dung for defiling Him
This covenant with the Levites was to bring life and peace, thus requiring reverence, which their fathers observed
They passed on the truth to the people as received from God, lived righteously and turned many from lives of sin
The words of a priest should preserve knowledge of God, and people should go to him for instruction, but the priests had left God’s path
The author of Hebrews said we have not come to a physical mountain characterized by fear and trembling as the Israelites did at Mount Sinai
But we have come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God
We have come to the assembly of God’s firstborn children whose names are written in heaven
We have come to God the judge and to the spirits of the righteous now made perfect
And to Jesus we have come, who not only mediates but his blood speaks forgiveness not vengeance like the blood of Abel
Therefore, we must be careful to listen to the One who is speaking, not neglecting God’s word
If Israel was punished for not listening to Moses, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks from heaven
God will again shake the earth removing all that is shakeable, save his Kingdom
Hence, let us be thankful and please God by worshipping him with holy fear and awe
