Psalm seventy-eight is one of the historical Psalms which reviews aspects of Israel’s history to instruct present and future generations so they would learn lessons from the past
The author recounts the rebellious act of their ancestors who refused God’s law and failed to keep His covenant
Also, the events of God’s miracles on Israel’s behalf in Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness, make provisions available to them all through the journey
But they continued to sin, wilfully put God to test by telling him to give them the food they craved.
They spoke against God, saying if He has provided water, can He provide bread and meat?
The LORD heard what they said and became angry with the people of Israel because they did not trust in Him, they did not believe that God could save them.
In the second lesson, Apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthians gave warnings from Israel’s history
Although their ancestors were all under the cloud and passed through the sea which symbolizes baptism
Although they ate spiritual food and drank spiritual water that came from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, which was Christ
Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, so they were killed in the wilderness
These things that happened to them are examples for us, to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did
As them, we should not be idolaters, we should not commit sexual immorality, we should not test Christ, and we should not grumble, because they suffered the consequences of these deeds
Paul added, “Anyone who thinks they are standing strong should be careful that they don’t fall”
Our temptations are not new, thus, we should trust God, who will not let us be tempted more than we can bear and will also provide a way of escape
