1ST LESSON: Isaiah 29:11-16

2ND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 1:18-21

God gave a message of warning to Jerusalem, promising both judgment and redemption, but their inability to understand what God was saying would bring them harsh consequences.

God has poured a spirit of deep sleep on the people of Jerusalem and has closed the eyes of their prophets and visionaries.

Thus, visions of Isaiah become unintelligible to them; they can neither open nor read to understand.

Their religion lacks personal reality; they honor God with their lips, but their hearts are far from God.

And their worship only follows the tradition that is learned by repeated recitations, denying regard for its meaning.

Therefore, God will do an amazing thing and make the wisdom of their wise men perish.

God will bring judgment to those who try to hide their plans from God, because man, like clay, now accuses God, the potter.

Paul wrote to the Corinthian church, first addressing the division among them and emphasizing that Christ and preaching the Good News should be their priority.

Paul’s preaching among the people has been dependent on the power of the cross of Christ, not clever speech.

The proclamation of a crucified savior is nonsense to unbelievers, but for believers, the news of the crucified Savior is “the power of God.”

This is because God is at work proclaiming this message, persuading sinners to come to faith in Jesus and be saved.

Paul alluded to Isaiah 29:14: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

Confirming that what God achieved through Jesus’ death on the cross transcends human comprehension and cannot be explained by the Greek philosophies prevalent at that time.

God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish by vastly surpassing the intellectual prowess of the Jewish scholars and the Greek philosophers in his work through Jesus.
