The exodus is the beginning of the journey of the Israelites to becoming a holy nation. The month of Aviv (corresponding to March-April in the Western calendar) marks the beginning of the nation’s religious calendar- the Jewish nation
Just after the firstborn sons and animals of the Egyptians are killed, this passage opens with God’s instructions to the Israelites to dedicate all firstborn sons and animals to God when they arrive at the land
However, they can redeem all firstborns with a lamb as a sacrifice to God
The Israelites are to remember the day and mark a festival to God; the Festival of Passover
They are to celebrate the fulfillment of God’s promise to their ancestors in giving them the land flowing with milk and honey
They are to acknowledge to their children that God spared their first sons but killed the first sons of the Egyptians and delivered them with great power
The second lesson opens with a warning to pay attention to the gospel, for if God justly punished people for violating the Mosaic commands, he will certainly punish people for neglecting the gospel of Christ
The author revealed that God has not placed the rulership of this world at the hands of the angels but man
This is fulfilled in Jesus who though was God but was made fully human (incarnate), for a little while lower than the angels, and suffered death so that by God’s grace he might taste death for everyone
Jesus was made perfect through suffering, he purifies people from their sins, lead them to salvation, and called them children to share in his glory
Friends, it is good to know that Jesus shared fully in our humanity and experienced death for all of us so that we can share fully in his glorious victory over death and the devil.
