The LORD revealed himself to the children of Israel by coming down on Mount Sinai
But the people must consecrate themselves two days in preparation to meet God
They are to wash their clothes and avoid sexual relations which is related to ceremonial uncleanliness
Nonetheless, the closest they can come is to the foot of the mountain, they must not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it
Anyone who touches must be put to death by stoning or shot with an arrow, not to be touched
On the third day, the coming down of God on the mountain was accompanied by thunder, lightning, thick cloud, smoke, and fire
Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him
God called Moses to the top of the mountain so that he can receive the law for the people, but warned that no man comes near the mountain because the Holy God descends on it
The second lesson presents the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost as the disciples converge
The Holy Spirit came with a sound like the blowing of a violent wind, they saw what seem to be tongues of fire resting on each of them and accompanied by speaking in tongues
The Jews and Gentiles converted to Judaism through circumcision present at the Pentecost Festival were surprised to hear the disciples speaking their language
This is because many of them were Jews in the diaspora who had a third native dialect in addition to Hebrew (their own) and Greek (the lingua franca of the Roman Empire), so they concluded the men are drunk
Peter stood before the crowd that had gathered in bewilderment, assuring them that the disciples are not drunk and confirming that this is the end-time outpouring of the Holy Spirit that the prophet Joel predicted
And a time of salvation where everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
