Moses called to the new generation of Israelites for whole-hearted commitment
For sure, the LORD will bring them to the Land He had promised their ancestors
With existing farms and infrastructures, abundant in resources including food, wine, and water
But caution must be taken, such that the satisfaction of the Land will not overwhelm them to forget God or worship the gods of the people
They must fear God and worship Him alone, for He is a jealous God and would destroy the Israelites for rebellion and idolatry
They must not complain as their fathers did for water at Massah (Meribah) but do what is right in the sight of God
Likewise, they must pass the law and decrees to their children and grandchildren, telling them of God’s salvation and their deliverance from slavery in Egypt
And God would count their obedience as righteousness
The second lesson covers the teaching of Jesus about watchfulness
The passage presents three parables urging his followers to prepare for his return
In the first, the disciples should consider themselves as servants who are waiting for their master to return from a wedding feast
They should be dressed in their apron, ready for service, and keep their lamps burning so that they will be rewarded on His return
Secondly, the disciples should be ready for the coming of the Son of Man and not fall victim as a homeowner who is taken unaware by a burglar
The third urges those who are waiting to remain faithful
Those who “give them their food allowance at the proper time” behave like subordinates while the ones who “eat and drink and get drunk” act like they are the master, and they do not expect him to return
