The first lesson covers an aspect of miscellaneous law that stresses the exercising of compassion for the poor
God gave the following three direct examples as a law, and in favour of the socially marginalized and economically deprived
First, per adventure they forget some grain in the field during a harvest, they must not go back to it
Such shall be for the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows, and by leaving some grain for this category of people, God will bless them in everything they do
Similarly, when they beat olive trees, they must not go back to check the branches
When they gather grapes also, they must not go back to collect the grapes forgotten
The Israelites must not forget the oppression they went through in Egypt; they were slaves in Egypt but God set them free, hence they should be kind to the poor
The second lesson also covers a session of Jesus’ teaching to his disciples as an example of how a follower should follow Christ and handle wealth
Starting with a striking statement, “Don’t fear, little flock. Your Father wants to share his kingdom with you”.
Therefore, “sell your possessions and give the poor”
This statement should not be taken literally in its hermeneutical application but implies “leaving everything to follow Jesus”.
As we follow Jesus, we should not focus on accumulating wealth but instead, be generous to people in need
Jesus taught that this is the only way a disciple can keep his riches from being lost.
He will not only have his treasure stored in heaven but will last forever because neither thieves nor moths will destroy it
And the disciple's heart will be drawn to heaven where his treasure is.
